Planning, hiring and measuring SEO

SEO Strategy for Businesses

For business owners and marketing managers: how to start with SEO, choose an agency or freelancer, measure results and plan for new markets.

SEO strategy for businesses: where to start, by situation

This category is for business owners and marketing managers who make the decisions about SEO rather than doing every task themselves: whether to start on your own, who to hire, how to tell whether it’s working, and what changes when you sell in more than one country. Find the situation below that matches yours and start there.

Where to start, by situation

You’re just starting

  • SEO for small businesses: what you can do yourself (a clear website, a verified Google Business Profile, Search Console), how Google ranks local results, and a week-by-week first-month checklist.
  • How AI is changing digital advertising: a short, general overview of AI in paid ads (targeting, personalization, budget automation), useful if you’re weighing ads alongside SEO. Keep in mind that Google says advertising with it has no effect on your organic search results.

You’re measuring results

You’re expanding abroad

  • International SEO statistics: 127 statistics on web languages, search engines by country, hreflang errors and cross-border buying, each linked to the organization that published it.

Common decisions and mistakes

Hiring before you know the basics. Google’s page Do you need an SEO? says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself, and that knowing the techniques helps you notice when someone proposes one Google discourages. In our view, that’s worth a few hours of reading even if you hire someone later.

Paying for promises. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and lists ranking guarantees, a claimed “special relationship” with Google and “priority submit” offers as warning signs. Buying links that pass ranking credit is link spam under Google’s spam policies, and Google is explicit that you are responsible for the actions of any company you hire.

Choosing a hiring model by its label. A freelancer fits a scoped job in one skill, an agency fits work that needs several skills at once (a migration, a launch in new markets), and an in-house SEO fits a site where search is a core channel and changes ship every week. Whichever you pick, keep ownership of your Search Console property, analytics, domain and content, and add outside help as users.

Judging too early, or on the wrong number. The SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others several months. Indexed pages and impressions move before clicks and conversions, so set a baseline first. A site-wide average position can look stable while visibility collapses: on our own site it moved from 71 to 74 in the month our impressions fell from 1,393 to 24.

Treating translation as international SEO. Google recommends a separate URL for each language version, with hreflang annotations, rather than switching the language by cookies or browser settings, partly because Googlebot usually crawls from the US. Implementation is where sites slip: in Ahrefs’ 2023 study, 67% of domains using hreflang had at least one error. And a Google-only plan misses much of the search demand in markets such as Russia, China and South Korea, where Yandex, Baidu and Naver hold large shares.

Getting help

If you’d rather have one team handle keyword research, on-page work, content and links as a single strategy, with reporting you can check against your own Search Console data, see our SEO service. The questions in our agency guide apply to us as much as to anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a business start with SEO?

Find out where you stand before changing anything: check that Google indexes your site, verify it in Search Console and, if you serve local customers, claim your Google Business Profile. Google says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself, starting with its SEO Starter Guide.

When is it worth paying for SEO help?

Google names a site redesign or a new site launch as a great time to hire. Beyond that, outside help makes sense when the work needs skills you don't have, such as a migration, stubborn indexing problems or several markets, or when you know what to do but don't have the time.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Google says some changes take effect within hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. Expect indexed pages and impressions to move before clicks and conversions do.

Which numbers should a business owner watch for SEO?

Non-branded organic clicks from Search Console and conversions from organic search in your analytics, because they show whether search brings in new customers. Impressions, indexed pages and position distribution explain why those two move; a site-wide average position on its own can mislead.

What changes when SEO covers more than one country or language?

Each language or regional version needs its own URL, with hreflang annotations so Google can show searchers the right one, and research per market rather than translated keywords. Google isn't the default everywhere: in September 2026 Yandex led search in Russia and Baidu in China, and Naver was close behind Google in South Korea (Statcounter).
